Welcome to Early Modern Courts! We (Erin Griffey and Jemma Field), are specialists in early modern court culture, especially that of the Jacobean and Caroline courts in England. We share a particular interest in the political value of female agency and patronage, which extends to portraiture, beauty practices, jewellery and apparel, collecting, architecture and garden design. This blog is intended as a platform to share our ideas and provide insight into some of the weird and wonderful things that furnish the early modern world. We will also profile fellow scholars, post information on relevant conferences and new publications, and offer personalised guides to some of our favourite cities in Europe. Since we’re both art historians, you can expect a lot of images and objects!
